Visit to London, the United Kingdom and Hamburg, Germany
26 February ‐ 3 March 2017

The Secretary for Transport and Housing and Chairman of the Hong Kong Maritime and Port Board (HKMPB), Professor Anthony Cheung Bing-leung led a delegation to visit London, the United Kingdom (UK) and Hamburg, Germany from 26 February 2017 to 3 March 2017. The delegation comprised members of the HKMPB and representatives of the maritime industry. The five-day visit comprised a total of 21 meetings and gatherings with 31 organisations in the two cities. In addition, a seminar “Opportunities for Maritime Services under the Belt and Road Initiative” in London was co-organized with Cass Business School and HKTDC. In Hamburg a seminar was co-organized with HKTDC for promoting Hong Kong's maritime services.

Through the meetings, gatherings and promotion seminars, Hong Kong's status as an international maritime centre and a gateway of China was highlighted and reinforced. Meeting participants in the two cities all affirmed Hong Kong's importance in the maritime development of the Asia-Pacific region, and they acknowledged that Hong Kong possessed a special role in promoting Mainland China's Belt and Road Initiative. In particular, against the background of sluggish international trade and tough shipping business environment, the Belt and Road Initiative was seen as a great opportunity for UK and German enterprises to sustain, and possibly expand, their business, and Hong Kong could serve as an ideal place for them to establish or strengthen their foothold in Asia-Pacific region.
