Visit to Shanghai, China
2‐4 December 2019

The Under Secretary for Transport and Housing, Dr Raymond So Wai-man led an eleven-member delegation comprising members of the Hong Kong Maritime and Port Board and industry representatives to visit Shanghai from 2 to 4 December 2019 to promote Hong Kong’s maritime industry and the high value-added maritime services.

During the visit, the delegation participated in the opening ceremony of the Hong Kong Pavilion at the Marintec China 2019 on 3 December. Dr Raymond So officiated the ceremony. Marintec China, which is held biennially, is the largest marine technology exhibition in Asia and the second largest of its kind in the world. The delegation also took part in the Hong Kong-Shanghai Maritime Industry networking luncheon, and Dr So had delivered a speech to promote Hong Kong's quality maritime services to the Shanghai shipping community.

The delegation had also called on various government authorities and maritime-related organisations in Shanghai, such as the Shanghai Municipal Transport Commission, the China Shipowners’ Association, the Shanghai Maritime University, the Shanghai International Shipping Institute and the China Ports and Harbours Association, to learn about the latest development of Shanghai’s maritime and port industry and explore possible opportunities for further collaboration.

On 4 December, the delegation met with China COSCO Shipping Corporation and the China Shipowners Mutual Assurance Association to exchange views on maritime-related issues worldwide, such as green shipping, the reduction of CO2 emission, application of advanced technology in shipping industry, etc. The delegation also took the opportunity to introduce Hong Kong’s plan to introduce tax concessions to bolster ship leasing and marine insurance businesses.

Through the networking luncheon and meetings during the three-day visit, we have reinforced our relationship with the shipping sector in Shanghai and promoted our maritime industry and the high value-added maritime services. We look forward to fostering a closer connection with the maritime community in the Mainland in the future.
