Visit to Athens, Greece
5‐8 June 2016

The Secretary for Transport and Housing cum Chairman of the Hong Kong Maritime and Port Board (HKMPB), Professor Anthony Cheung Bing-leung led a delegation comprising members of the HKMPB and Government representatives to visit Athens from 5 to 8 June 2016 to promote Hong Kong's maritime services. This was the first overseas promotion visit by the HKMPB since its establishment on 1 April 2016.

The delegation attended a business luncheon co-organised by Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in Brussels and the Hellenic Federation of Enterprises on 6 June 2016 to promote the maritime industry of Hong Kong and to encourage Greek enterprises to set up in Hong Kong. The delegation also participated in the opening ceremony of Posidonia 2016, the world's largest biennial international shipping exhibition. Professor Cheung also officiated at the opening of the Hong Kong Pavilion on the same day.

The delegation met with the Greek Minister for Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy and Chinese Ambassador to Greece to discuss business opportunities arising from the Belt and Road Initiatives. They also met with various maritime-related organisations, including Union of Greek Shipowners, Hellenic Chamber of Shipping and Piraeus Port Authority, during which the delegation exchanged views with the Greek shipping community on the latest trends in international shipping and explored closer cooperation opportunities.

The visit has been fruitful in reaffirming Hong Kong's status as an international maritime centre and maintaining rapport with the Greek shipping community.
