Visit to Shanghai, China
4-6 December 2023

The Secretary for Transport and Logistics, Mr Lam Sai-hung, led a delegation comprising members from the Hong Kong Maritime and Port Board, the Marine Department, Invest Hong Kong and the Hong Kong Trade Development Council to visit Shanghai from 4 to 6 December 2023 to promote Hong Kong’s maritime industry and the high value-added maritime services.

During the visit, the delegation participated in the opening ceremony of the Hong Kong SAR Pavilion at the Marintec China 2023 exhibition on 5 December, which was officiated by Mr Lam. Marintec China is the largest marine technology exhibition in Asia and the second largest in the world. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the biennial exhibition was suspended in 2021 and resumed this year. The delegation also took part in the Hong Kong-Shanghai Maritime Industry networking luncheon to explore possible opportunities for further collaboration and strengthen ties between the two cities, as well as to celebrate the 4th anniversary of the establishment of the Regional Desk (Shanghai) of the Hong Kong Shipping Registry.

The delegation met with representatives from various government authorities and maritime-related organisations in Shanghai, including the China Ports and Harbours Association, the China Shipowners’ Association, the Shanghai Municipal Transportation Commission, the Shanghai Municipal Commission of Commerce, the Shanghai Maritime University and the Shanghai International Shipping Institute. Through in-depth exchanges, the delegation learned about the latest developments of Shanghai’s maritime, port and logistics industry and promoted the advantages of Hong Kong's maritime sector.

On 6 December, the delegation visited the Yangshan Phase IV Automated Terminal in Shanghai in the morning to learn more about the operation of various terminal facilities, including the intelligential operation of the digital twin terminals. They also met with representatives of the terminal to discuss collaboration opportunities between Hong Kong and Yangshan Port. The delegation then visited the Lingang Group and the Nangang “roll-on roll-off” Terminal to examine the important role of the Lingang Special Area in promoting the integrated development of the Yangtze River Delta.

Through the three-day promotional visit, we reinforced our relationship with the shipping sector in Shanghai and promoted our maritime industry and high value-added maritime services. We look forward to continue deepening our connection with the maritime community in the Mainland in the future.
